Gorefest es una banda holandesa de death metal fundada por Jan Chris de Koeijer, Marc Hoogendoorn, Alex van Schaik y Frank Harthoorn en 1990.

Con sólo dos meses de existencia, la banda grabó su primera demo, Tangled in Gore, con la discográfica independiente holandesa Foundation 2000. En 1990 grabaron otra demo, Horrors in a Retarded Mind. En 1991 grabaron su primer álbum, Mindloss, y comenzaron una gira por Bélgica y Holanda como teloneros de Carcass. Colin Richardson fue el productor del disco.

Antes de una gira con Revenant por Nueva Jersey, el guitarrista Alex van Schaik fue reemplazado por Boudewijn Bonebakker. No satisfechos con Foundation 2000, firmaron en 1992 con Nuclear Blast. Hoogendoorn fue expulsado de la banda por carencia de interés por el grupo, y lo sustituyó Ed Warby (que había trabajado con la banda melódica Elegy). Poco después grabaron False (producido también por Colin Richardson). El disco fue un éxito en composición, técnica y letra, por lo que vendió muchas copias en los Holanda y Alemania. En los meses siguientes realizaron una gira por Europa con Deicide y Atrocity, tocando en Alemania, Suecia, España, República Checa e Inglaterra. En 1993 tocaron su más famoso concierto en el Dynamo Open Air de Eindhoven, del que salió su disco en directo The Eindhoven Insanity. También en 1993 realizaron su primera gira por América.

En 1994 grabaron Erase, producido por Pete Coleman, un disco más maduro y con unas actitudes más tradicionales del death metal. La opinión de este disco está dividida, pero Erase fue un éxito de ventas internacionales entre 1994 y 1995. La banda realizó varias giras en distintos países.

En el EP Fear en 1994 y en el single Freedom en 1996, la banda revela canciones en las que muestra un cambio drástico de estilo, el cual se vio en los discos Soul Survivor (1996) y Chapter 13 (1998) con un estilo mucho más rockero. Estos cambios no gustaron a los fans del grupo, que lo abandonaron. Las ventas fueron muy bajas y en 1999 deciden separarse.

En el 2004 vuelven a unirse para tocar en varios festivales de verano, y en 2005 vuelven a grabar un disco, La Muerte, con la que regresan a una dirección musical similar a la de False. Ellos mismos produjeron el disco, mezclado por Tue Madsen, de Antfarm Studios. Mucha gente se sorprendió por la dureza del disco, que mezcla todos los elementos anteriores de Gorefest.

Avantasia es una banda de Metal con estilos de Opera, formada por dos álbumes escritos por Tobias Sammet, vocalista y líder de la banda de Hard Rock/heavy Metal Edguy. El nombre de este proyecto es una mezcla de dos palabras: Avalon y Fantasía "y describe un mundo más allá de la imaginación humana". Este proyecto consiste en dos CDs de 23 piezas, en el que cuenta una historia ficticia de un monje dominico, Gabriel, en el año 1602.

Desarrollo

En 1999, durante la gira de Edguy "Theater Of Salvation", Tobias Sammet comenzó a formar la idea de una ópera en metal, un álbum conceptual con varios músicos invitados. Cuando la gira estaba terminada sacó su plan de hacer este proyecto, invitando a varios artistas conocidos del metal como Kai Hansen, André Matos (ex Angra, ex Shaaman) y Michael Kiske (ex Helloween). En 2000 salió el primer EP con el nombre de Avantasia. En 2001 salió a la luz "The Metal Opera" y el proyecto fue completado en 2002 con "The Meta

Formada por los hermanos Sakis y Themis Tolis, en sus inicios el grupo tocaba una cruda mezcla de death metal con elementos de grindcore. Un año más tarde la banda decide volcar su estilo al Black/Death metal en la vena de Bathory y Venom.

En esos primeros años los miembros de la banda utilizaban nombre tales como Necromayhem (Sakis), Necrosauron (Themis) y Mutilator (el bajista original Jim). Luego de cambiar de estilo la banda graba varios demos y discos de corta duración, presentándose a la vez pocas veces en vivo, pero la situación se revertiría con el tiempo. Siendo respetados por gente de la escena black metal, como los polémicos Euronymous o Varg Vikernes, Rotting Christ incluyó atmósferas oscuras y teclados desde sus primeros lanzamientos.

El año 1996 marca la partida del bajista Jim "Mutilator", a partir de esa fecha la banda atraviesa un periodo en el que entran y salen miembros de la banda, permaneciendo como base estable y compositiva los hermanos Tolis y el bajista Andreas.

El presente los encuentra como una de las bandas de rock más populares de Grecia, a la vez el disco Sanctus Diabolos marca en cierta manera un regreso parcial a sus raíces, luego de varios lanzamientos en que el grupo incluyó muchos pasajes de Gothic Metal o experimentales.
