Bathory fue un grupo sueco de black metal, considerado uno de los pioneros en los géneros del black metal y el viking metal. El nombre del grupo proviene de la "condesa sangrienta": Erzsébet Báthory.

Bathory se formó en Estocolmo en el año 1983 por el entonces joven de 18 años conocido como Quorthon (antes tuvo otros sobrenombres como "Black Spade" o "Ace Shoot"), cuyo nombre real era Tomas Forsberg. Tras muchos cambios en la formación y en el nombre, el grupo permaneció con el nombre de Bathory. Ese mismo año, Quorthon consiguió asegurarse el consentimiento del jefe de Tyfon Grammofon para grabar dos pistas para el recopilatorio Scandinavian Metal Attack. Esas pistas llamaron, inesperadamente, la atención de los fans. Poco después, Tyfon Grammofon se puso en contacto con Quorthon para ofrecerle la grabación de un álbum completo.

Mucha gente llego a catolagar a Bathory como viles imitadores de VENOM, pero con el tiempo cada banda quedo en el lugar que le corresponde, a base de trabajo y ganas de hacer algo.

Aunque el disco de Venom Black Metal de 1982 fue el primero en acuñar el término, fueron los primeros álbumes de Bathory con sus letras satánicas, su pobre producción y las voces características, las que definieron el género del Black metal. Las siguientes grabaciones del grupo, su álbum homónimo, The Return y Under the Sign of the Black Mark están consideradas como de las más grandes influencias en los grupos del black metal noruego, los cuales extendieron la popularidad del black metal a comienzos de los años 90.

Las primeras señales de lo que iba a continuar aparecieron en el álbum que los fans consideran el mejor de la banda: Blood Fire Death en el cual muchas canciones tenían un ritmo más tranquilo para permitir una composición hacia un estilo mucho más épico. También supuso la incorporación del tema vikingo a los elementos musicales del grupo. Aun así, muchos de los elementos clásicos del Black metal estaban todavía presentes. Fue con la publicación del álbum Hammerheart cuando Bathory consiguió sorprender a sus fans. El estilo cambió drásticamente a uno menos agresivo, más épico y atmosférico; las letras tenían temas de estilo vikingo y de la mitología nórdica de Escandinavia. Es el comienzo de otro de los géneros de música extrema: el Viking metal. Este estilo se consolidó en los álbumes siguientes: Twilight of the Gods y Blood on Ice.

Con el disco de 1994, Requiem, Bathory cambió su estilo una vez más, esta vez a un retro-thrash parecido al de los grupos de la Bay Area. En los últimos años los críticos han indicado los erráticos cambios que el grupo siguió en su estilo, volviendo al tema vikingo con los álbumes Nordland en 2002 y 2003.

El 7 de junio de 2004, Quorthon fue encontrado muerto en su apartamento de Estocolmo, aparentemente de un fallo cardiaco.

El sello alemán Blackmark, editor de la mayor parte de sus trabajos, publica el 3 de junio de 2006 el triple recopilatorio In Memory of Quorton. Se publica por separado y conjuntamente en box set con DVD añadido, libro de 174 páginas y póster. El recopilatorio contiene temas tanto de Bathory como de los trabajos de Quorton por separado y de Jennie Tebler
