Desde el hogar de The Beatles, Carcass surge como una banda brutal y llena de energía, con líricas sobre enfermedades humanas, con una atmósfera carnicera y llena de un sonido crudo e intenso. Carcass fue innovador, formando parte de la oleada de bandas de gran calidad y agresividad como Napalm Death y Pungent Stench.

Los dos primeros discos hicieron que los fans de la música más extrema se fijaran en ellos: al sonido saturado de ruido, algo hecho con toda premeditación, se unían letras provocativas y viscerales, con títulos tan sugerentes como "Exume to Consume" o "Vomited Anal Tract". Tras los primeros discos la banda evolucionó hacia un estilo más depurado y técnico. El perfecto equilibrio entre agresividad y técnica lo encontramos en el disco Necroticism: Discanting the Insalubrius, que posiblemente sea su obra más representativa. El disco, dotado de riffs y cambios de ritmo muy elaborados, a los que se unen unos textos de pseudomedicina declamados con una cadencia especial por la voz de Jeff Walker, sumerge al oyente en una atmósfera malsana al mismo tiempo que embriagadora. Uno de los temas que más destaca en todos estos aspectos es "Pedigree Butchery".

Con la salida al mercado de Heartwork el sonido de la banda evoluciona hacia un aspecto algo más comercial, con fuertes influencias de Kreator y en general el thrash europeo.

A esas alturas la banda ya tenía problemas con su disquera, que junto a diferentes puntos de vista entre los miembros acerca de hacia qué destino musical avanzar acabaron con la disolución del grupo. Bill Steer se fue a hacer rock and roll y blues y los miembros restantes formaron Black Star, inspirados en la canción del mismo nombre del álbum "Swansong", orientados a un metal más melódico influenciado por el hard rock de los 70's. Michael Amott, que dejó la banda antes de la publicación de su último y póstumo disco, se centró en lo que entonces eran proyectos paralelos del guitarrista, Arch Enemy, banda de death metal melódico y Spiritual Beggars, banda muy influida por los grandes grupos de hard rock de los años 1970.

Tras la disolución vio la luz Wake Up And Smell The Carcass, una especie de testamento de la banda en el que junto a temas nuevos se pueden encontrar rarezas y versiones en directo. En la actualidad, Jeff Walker toca con "Brujeria" y lanzò un disco como solista con versiones de musica country, en el que colaboraron Bill Steer y Ken Owen.

Anónimo dijo...: Swansong is the final studio album by the British Melodic death metal band Carcass. It was released on June 10, 1996 in the UK for Earache Records. This album was intended to be their major label debut, having been signed by Columbia records following the success of Heartwork, but disputes with that record company left them to return to Earache. The album was re-released on 21 July 2008 as a dualdisc featuring the 5th part of The Pathologist's Report as well as a set of stickers in a digipak with the bonus track mentioned below.

About the album

Because Swansong continued the progression towards a more melodic style (beginning with Heartwork), it was not received well by all fans. However, the album gained Carcass many new fans, reaching No. 46 on Billboard magazine's Heatseakers chart.

The band had always shown a sense of humor in their song titles, and Swansong illustrated this with titles such as "Keep on Rotting in the Free World" and "Generation Hexed".

A limited edition of this album was released as a brain-shaped CD, with a bonus 2-track CD 'Somnus Pecunia Cibus'. The reason for the bonus disc was to include "Go to Hell", which wouldn't fit on the brain shaped CD (Made by Nimbus Manufacturing in Wales, UK) due to the 'cutting' into the disc required for the brain shape. This delayed the release of the disc by a week (originally planned for 3 June 1996, the same day as Metallica's Load), so an extra track, "Emotional Flatline" was included as an apology for the delay.
